FWR Field Report: Maple Leafs lose again; Peter Sykora scratched
By Dmitriy Richter
A mid-week roundup of the NHL's happenings:
- -The Toronto Maple Leafs fell to the Dallas Stars 4-3 in overtime, courtesy of a goal by James Neal with around two minutes remaining in the extra frame. Nikolai Kulemin tallied two goals and Jason Blake earned three assists amid talks of him being sent down to the AHL. The 1-7-2 Maple Leafs visit the 7-1-1 Sabres in Buffalo on Friday. {ESPN.com}
- -Washington Capitals left winger Quintin Laing has been diagnosed with the H1N1 piggy flu. He joins Avalanche backup Peter Budaj on the list of the infected. Luckily for the NHL, only mediocre players have been victims thus far. {Washington Post}
- -Speaking of mediocrity, a healthy Petr Sykora was scratched for last night's game between Minnesota and the Nashville Predators. With one goal in six games this season, Sykora isn't doing much to show he was a worthwhile risk for the Wild (albeit a small one). {PuckUpdate}
- -The Phoenix Coyotes will be sold to the NHL, temporarily ending the bitter feud between billionaire owner-wannabe Jim Balsille and the NHL. Still, we can't see this team staying in Phoenix past next season. {HockeyPlumber}
- -Check out the hockey website On Goal Analysis. Beyond providing regular updates about the goings-on of the NHL, they have developed and implemented a seemingly impressive (but top-secret) formula to determine which teams will make the playoff cut.
So far, it looks like Colorado and Calgary are locks in the West, while Florida and Toronto are already essentially out of contention. - -Ryan Walsh of Fadoo.ca wrote a great piece last week in response to all of the criticism surrounding Carey Price (yet again). Sure, Halak is the #1 keeper for the Canadiens as I write this, but it would be foolish to write Price off at this point in his career. {Fadoo.ca}
